Bitwarden: the open-source password manager

Bitwarden is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted password manager available on every platform. It replaces sticky notes and password reuse with a secure vault, synced across all your devices. Free for personal use, it is audited regularly by third parties.

Key features

  • Encrypted vault with web, desktop and mobile access (iOS/Android)
  • Browser extensions for auto-fill (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.)
  • Password and username generator
  • Built-in TOTP authenticator (2FA) on the premium version
  • Secure sharing via organizations and collections
  • Security report: compromised, weak or reused passwords
  • Self-hosting possible (Vaultwarden)

Quick setup

  1. Create a free account at bitwarden.com
  2. Choose a long, unique master password — it's the only one to remember
  3. Install the browser extension for your browser
  4. Import your existing passwords: Tools → Import data (CSV, KeePass, 1Password…)
  5. Install the desktop or mobile app for offline access
  6. Enable two-factor authentication in your account settings

Usage tips

  • Set up auto-lock after inactivity to protect your vault
  • Use the generator to create passwords of at least 16 characters
  • Check the security reports regularly to spot compromised passwords
  • Enable biometric unlock (fingerprint, Face ID) on mobile for convenience
  • Also store your secure notes, payment cards and identities in the vault
